How to run a social media squad

A social mission runs as a closed loop on the Marketing Squad. You draw the path in the mission goals: the channels, the week, and the voice examples. The Mission Commander works inside that path and assigns the calendar to Nova and the posts to Quill. Steering is the approval step. Quill drafts the posts. The squad does not publish them.

The squad you import

The template is the Marketing Squad, on /squads. It ships with Nova, Quill, Rank, Spark, and Metric. For this mission:

  • Nova, Growth Lead, keeps the marketing calendar and the weekly priorities.
  • Quill, Content Writer, drafts the social posts in the voice of the examples you provide, with a headline and two alternates where a line needs them.
  • Rank, Spark, and Metric stay off the board unless the goals add an audit, an ad, or a report.

There is no social-network connector on this template, and no required connection at all. The posts are drafts in your folder.

You do this in the xSquads desktop app, on a folder of your own files. Mac now, with Windows coming soon. The product page is xSquads for Work.

How the mission runs

Step 1. Import the Marketing Squad

Open the squad templates and import the Marketing Squad onto the mission. Keep Nova and Quill. Remove Rank, Spark, and Metric if this week is only the calendar and the posts.

Step 2. Leave the connector list empty

This template has no required connection. The squad does not log into a social network from this page. Do not connect treg or Vapi. Put the week's brief and the past posts in the mission folder instead.

Step 3. Create the mission and set the goals

Create the mission and write the goals in plain language. Those goals are the path: which channels, how many posts, and what the posts must not say. Point the mission at the local folder with the brief and the voice examples. The commander does not get to widen that path. A goal you can start from, as written on the squad page: draft a blog post and three social posts from this brief. Narrow it to the three social posts and Nova's calendar for the week. Leave the blog post out so Quill does not write an article.

Step 4. Let the Mission Commander assign the work

Save the mission. The Mission Commander creates tasks on the task board and assigns them only inside the goals you wrote. Nova takes the week's calendar and the priority of each post. Quill takes the three drafts. Rank should not get an audit, and Spark should not get ad variants, unless you added those goals.

Step 5. Add a task, steer, and approve before anyone posts

Steering is the approval step. Add a task on the board, or correct the Mission Commander in the group chat, when a line should not go out. A useful task to add yourself: rewrite the third post so it points at the brief's example, and drop the hashtag block. Quill does not publish. Start by approving every post.

How much to review

Start by approving everything. Autonomy is a dial, not a switch you flip for a week's posts.

Always sign off the channels, the claim, and the voice examples yourself. Raise the dial only when a week of posts needed small edits. A post that could run on any brand goes back. xSquads does not publish to the network for you.

What the goals have to name

  • The channels and the count. Three posts is the squad-page starting point. Change the number in the goals if you want a different count.
  • The voice examples, and the claims that are allowed. No invented stats.
  • What is out: a blog article, an ad test, an SEO audit.
  • Who posts. You do, after Review. The squad drafts and does not send.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who writes the posts?

Quill drafts them. Nova puts them on the week's calendar. Both are on the Marketing Squad. There is no separate social template.

Does the squad publish to LinkedIn or anywhere else?

No. Drafts wait in Review. You post them. The Marketing Squad page does not list a social-network connection.

How is this different from the blog mission?

The blog mission asks for the article and the newsletter, and leaves social out. This mission asks for the posts and the calendar, and leaves the article out. Same squad, different goals, so the cards are different.

What should I check before I approve a post?

Check the claim against the brief, the channel it is for, and whether the line sounds like the examples. If it could ship with the brand name swapped, send it back.

Can I add a fourth post after the board is created?

Yes. Add a task on the board, or tell the Mission Commander in the group chat. That is the steer. The new card still waits in Review.
