Claude Cowork compared with xSquads for Work

Give every knowledge worker their own xSquad

Choose Claude Cowork when the job is a website, a slide deck, or a spreadsheet, or when you want the work to keep going with the laptop closed. Choose xSquads for Work when the job is your own files: a personal squad of specialised teammates, and you review before anything is sent. The Mac app is available now. The Windows waitlist is open.

By Raina Rufus. Checked 22 October 2026.

Claude and Claude Cowork are Anthropic's names. xSquads is not affiliated with Anthropic.

In short

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agent inside the Claude desktop app. Anthropic says it reads and writes folders you connect, and that new Pro and Max tasks run in the cloud. xSquads for Work is a personal squad of specialised AI teammates on your own files. You review the work before anything is sent. Mac now, Windows waitlist open.

Claude Cowork and xSquads for Work

Both can do multi-step work on files you connect. They are not the same job.

Claude Cowork and xSquads for Work
Comparison pointxSquads for WorkClaude Cowork
What it isA personal squad of specialised AI teammates on your own files. The tagline is: Give every knowledge worker their own xSquad.Anthropic describes Cowork as the same agentic architecture as Claude Code, inside Claude Desktop, without opening a terminal. It takes on multi-step work rather than one prompt at a time.
Your filesThe squad works on the files and folders you point it at. You review the result before anything is sent.Anthropic says Claude reads and writes local files in folders you have connected, with no manual uploads or downloads, and that your folders stay on your computer.
A file a cloud task opensThis page does not describe a second copy. The edit is for you to review on your files.Anthropic says that when a task needs a file in the cloud, Claude fetches a copy of just that file, and that those copies are deleted when you delete the session. It also says files opened through the desktop app are processed on Anthropic's servers.
Where Cowork runsNot a claim this page makes. xSquads for Work is a Mac desktop app. The Windows waitlist is open.Anthropic says Cowork sessions run in the cloud by default, in an isolated temporary sandbox on Anthropic's servers. On 6 October 2026, new Pro and Max tasks moved to the cloud, and the Only on your computer setting was removed. Tasks already started on the computer stay there.
How the work is splitSeveral teammates with roles, on one task board. Finished work waits until you approve it.Anthropic says complex work is divided into smaller tasks with parallel workstreams, which it calls sub-agent coordination.
Websites and Office filesThe squad works on your files. This page does not claim a browser, or native Excel and PowerPoint output.Anthropic says Claude in Chrome pairs with Cowork to work on websites, and that Cowork creates Excel spreadsheets with formulas, PowerPoint presentations, and formatted documents.
Laptop closedNot a claim this page makes.Anthropic says cloud Cowork keeps working if you close the laptop, and that scheduled tasks can run with no device online. A cloud session cannot reach the computer if the desktop app is offline.
PlansMac now, for Apple Silicon. Windows waitlist open. No price is published here.Anthropic says Cowork is on paid plans. Desktop on macOS and Windows is on all paid plans. Web and mobile are Pro, Max, and Team, and Enterprise where an admin has enabled it. The pricing page lists more than one price, so this page does not quote one.

Anthropic's sentences below are from the docs linked further down, read on 22 October 2026. Anthropic also says Cowork and chat are becoming one Claude on Pro and Max, so the app may no longer show a separate Cowork button. The xSquads column is the product as this site describes it. It does not say where the model runs.

When Claude Cowork fits better

Cowork is the better fit for several real jobs. Those jobs are described on Anthropic's own pages.

Websites

Anthropic says Claude in Chrome pairs with Cowork so it can work on sites you use. A folder squad does not do that.

Excel and PowerPoint

Anthropic says Cowork creates spreadsheets with working formulas, slide decks, and formatted documents. That is a deliverable, not an edit to a file you already had.

Work that outlives the laptop

Anthropic says a cloud session keeps going when the laptop is closed, and that new scheduled tasks run in the cloud. xSquads for Work does not make that claim.

One task, split up

Anthropic says Cowork splits complex work into parallel workstreams. That is one assistant coordinating sub-agents, not a squad you staff by role.

More than a Mac app

Anthropic says desktop Cowork is on every paid plan, web and mobile are on Pro, Max, and Team, and the Chrome side panel is on Max and Team while it rolls out to Pro. Enterprise needs an admin for web, mobile, and the side panel.

Connectors

Anthropic says Cowork connects to outside tools through MCP connectors, skills, and plugins. It loads the ones on your claude.ai account. It does not read a Claude Code folder on your machine.

When xSquads for Work fits

xSquads for Work is the better fit when the work is a folder you already use, and a person has to approve what leaves.

The work is already in a folder

Research, drafts, follow-ups, and reports that should stay in the files you already use. You point the squad at that folder.

More than one role

Give every knowledge worker their own xSquad: specialised teammates on one board, not a single assistant.

You review before anything is sent

Finished work waits for you. Nothing is sent until you approve it. The security page says what stays on the computer and what a task sends to an AI engine.

Mac now

The desktop app is available for Mac with Apple Silicon. The Windows waitlist is open on the downloads page.

The wrong tool for a browser job

If the task is a signed-in website, a deck, or a spreadsheet Cowork builds for you, Cowork is the better fit. This page is not arguing otherwise.

What users said

Public posts from 22 September to 22 October 2026. Not a hands-on test. Complaints in this window were easier to find than praise, and both are quoted. A line is what that person wrote, unless the note says an Anthropic page confirms it. These posts did not discuss Cowork pricing or limits, and they did not compare Cowork on Mac with Cowork on Windows. xSquads for Work is a Mac app now. The Windows waitlist is open.

Praise

"less like a chatbot and more like a workspace"

@vpramod2971. What that post said about Cowork. Not an Anthropic claim.

@mukparekh. A post showing Cowork used on a product video. No short sentence from it is quoted here.

Complaints

"Claude Cowork will no longer work locally starting October 6"

r/claude, 368 upvotes. Thread title, 150 comments. Anthropic's web, desktop, and mobile page confirms the date: new Pro and Max tasks run in the cloud, and Only on your computer was removed. The thread is the reaction.

"Personally I absolutely do not want any code copied outside for certain projects."

u/Neverdied, 39 upvotes. A preference. Anthropic does say files opened through the desktop app are processed on its servers, and that a cloud task fetches a copy of a file it needs.

"a lot of users didn't understand what cowork was"

u/Simo_Ylostalo, 166 upvotes. That commenter's read of the confusion. Not a measurement.

"just merging Chat and Cowork in the desktop client"

u/BranchLatter4294. Anthropic says Cowork and chat are becoming one Claude on Pro and Max. This comment does not add a date Anthropic published.

"Did Claude Code and Cowork just get a lobotomy?!"

r/claude. Thread title. The quality drop is the complaint. No Anthropic page used here confirms it.

"Since September 16th Anthropic merged Claude Chat and Claude Cowork into one infrastructure"

u/Dangerous-Nebula9366. User claim. Anthropic confirms a gradual Chat and Cowork unification on Pro and Max. It does not give 16 September, and it does not say quality dropped.

"Cowork performance worse than Code... not following instructions even if already set in Claude.md"

u/Straight-Score-3108. What that user reported. Not confirmed by an Anthropic page.

"Best OpenSource Claude Cowork alternative?"

r/LocalLLaMA. People asking for a replacement. Not evidence that one exists on this page.

"Claude Cowork flopped so Bad now Claude Duet has been shipped"

@AICEOGiuliano. One post after Duet's first day. Not a usage figure.

Also posted

r/hubspot. A thread about using Cowork with HubSpot.

r/grc. A thread asking who is using Cowork for governance, risk, and compliance.

@huangda_huang. A post about Cowork cloud tasks on Android. Anthropic's docs describe mobile on Pro, Max, and Team. This post is the Android mention.

One Windows error in the wider search was about ChatGPT Work, not Cowork. It is not used here. xSquads for Work remains a Mac app, with a Windows waitlist, not a Windows download.

Claude Duet, first day

On 21 October 2026 Anthropic's release notes opened a Claude Duet research preview. The Duet article says the waitlist starts with Pro and Max users in the US, that Duet is included in those plans, and that it uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. It is a separate app on iOS, Android, and claude.ai. The article does not state a dollar price. Claude's pricing page lists more than one price, so none is quoted. Anthropic also says Duet is designed around Claude Opus 5.5, runs on a virtual machine with its own browser, can use over 6,000 connectors and plugins, never directly sees passwords or sign-in tokens, and waits for approval before it sends, pays, signs, or deletes. The posts below are from that first day. Launch-day writing runs hot. A line is a user claim unless the note says the article confirms it.

Access, from users

"To save you a click, yes it will be available for $20 plans"

u/Momo--Sama, 326 upvotes. What users said about price. Anthropic says the preview is included in Pro and Max, and does not state a dollar price. The thread title was "Claude Duet: Anthropic just casually dropped the personal assistant" (1,018 upvotes, 155 comments).

"Claude Duet NOT available in EU"

r/ClaudeCode. Thread title. Anthropic says it is starting with Pro and Max users in the US. The article does not name the EU.

"US only again it seems for now"

r/Anthropic. What that thread said. The US start is the part Anthropic's article confirms.

@MiaAI_lab. A post pointing at the waitlist. Anthropic's article says join the waitlist.

"unlimited and free and untied to your data limit like dots is (for now)"

u/lordpuddingcup, 148 upvotes. A question about Duet, not a fact. Anthropic says the preview shares the plan's usage limits with the rest of Claude, and that background checks count toward those limits. The same thread (684 upvotes) described Opus 5.5, its own cloud computer, and 6,000+ integrations. Anthropic says Opus 5.5, a virtual machine, and over 6,000 connectors and plugins. "Cloud computer" is the thread's phrase.

"projects or local machines"

@daniel_xb1. A question about whether Duet can reach local files. Anthropic describes a virtual machine, and does not describe opening a folder on your computer the way Cowork's desktop docs do.

Praise

"Ive moved from GPT to claude and all I can say is. I love it. Claude duet? Sign me up"

r/ClaudeAI. Quoted as written, including "Ive". A first-day reaction, not a trial write-up.

"the most polished agent launch I've seen"

How I AI. That review also said Duet "lives on your phone." Anthropic's article says iOS, Android, and claude.ai, and that the virtual machine does not need your laptop or phone to be on.

"asks before it acts"

@cleofasrocha_. A short description. Anthropic's article says Duet waits for approval before it sends, pays, signs, or deletes.

Sceptics

"This is how I already use Claude so I probably just don't understand what it is Muse and Dots and Gots and Bots are actually doing differently"

u/GrizzlyP33, 133 upvotes. A sceptic on the first day. Not a product difference this page measured.

"I still don't have a use case at all for any of these autonomous and proactive agent implementations"

u/Fusifufu, 94 upvotes. That person's use case, stated as none.

"Make Dots but make it different, Duet it is."

u/otarU. A joke about the category. Not a spec.

"its value will depend on useful alerts and verifiable work"

@neuronium_ai. A condition, not a result from a test.

Company posts

"It never directly sees your passwords, a new classifier guards against sharing sensitive information"

@claudeai, 2,088 likes. Anthropic's own X account, not a help-centre page. The Duet article says the same about passwords and sign-in tokens, and describes the classifier.

@canva. Canva announced a connector on the first day. A company post, not a user trial.

@airtable. Airtable announced a connector on the first day. A company post, not a user trial.

These posts do not describe a Mac or Windows desktop app for Duet. Anthropic's article does not either. xSquads for Work is a Mac app now. The Windows waitlist is open.

How we compared

How we compared: Anthropic's documentation and its pricing page, read on 22 October 2026, plus the Claude Duet article and the 21 October 2026 release note for the short Duet section. Public posts from 22 September to 22 October 2026 are quoted under What users said and Claude Duet, first day. No hands-on test. A post is a user claim unless the note says an Anthropic page confirms it. The pricing page shows more than one price, and the Duet article states none, so no dollar price is quoted.
