ChatGPT Agent Alternative: xSquads on Your Own Files

Disclosure: xSquads is our own product. This post compares it with OpenAI's agent, and every claim about OpenAI comes from OpenAI's own documentation, cited below.

If you are looking for a ChatGPT agent alternative, the honest place to start is what OpenAI's agent is today. OpenAI documents two agent surfaces: the ChatGPT agent, which its help centre also calls agent mode, and ChatGPT Work, for longer jobs and finished deliverables. This post sets out what OpenAI says those products do, gives them their due, and then explains where xSquads for Work is different. Your own files, edited where they already sit, with a squad of bot teammates on one board.

In short

xSquads for Work is a ChatGPT agent alternative for work that lives in your own files and folders. A squad of AI bot teammates shares one task board and edits your files where they already sit, with no upload step and no copy to keep in sync. OpenAI runs its agent through the ChatGPT agent and ChatGPT Work.

What is the ChatGPT agent?

OpenAI's agent is the ChatGPT agent, which OpenAI's help centre also calls agent mode. OpenAI describes it as a unified system built from three earlier strengths: Operator's ability to work a website, deep research's ability to pull information together, and ChatGPT itself. OpenAI says it "can now do work for you using its own computer, handling complex tasks from start to finish."

The tools are OpenAI's own list. It works with "a visual browser that interacts with the web through a graphical-user interface", "a text-based browser for simpler reasoning-based web queries", "a terminal", and "direct API access". It "can leverage ChatGPT connectors, which allows you to connect apps like Gmail and Github". On control, OpenAI states that "ChatGPT requests permission before taking actions of consequence", and that you can "interrupt, take over the browser, or stop tasks at any point."

You start it from the tools menu or by typing /agent, and OpenAI notes that agent mode "does not require technical skills, and can be guided or interrupted mid-task". It is on paid plans only, with monthly message limits of 40 on Plus, Business and Enterprise and 400 on Pro, and it runs on the web, on iOS and Android, and on the macOS and Windows desktop apps. One continuity note from OpenAI: "Operator functionality is now integrated into ChatGPT agent mode. The Operator website is no longer accessible."

For longer work, OpenAI now points to ChatGPT Work. Its help centre describes it as "an agent designed for longer, multi-step work and finished deliverables", and lists documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports and sites among what it can produce. OpenAI states that Work "is available on ChatGPT web and mobile for eligible paid plans."

What does the ChatGPT agent do well?

A comparison that only flatters us is not worth reading and will not earn a citation. This is what OpenAI's agent is genuinely good at, in OpenAI's own words.

  • Working inside websites. The cloud browser "gives ChatGPT Work its own browser on a separate computer in the cloud". It "can read web pages, click buttons, enter information into forms, and carry out steps" on supported public and signed-in sites, and it "runs remotely in ChatGPT's own computer and can continue in the background". That is reach a folder-based squad does not have.
  • Connectors. OpenAI's agent "can leverage ChatGPT connectors, which allows you to connect apps like Gmail and Github", so a task can pull from the tools you already use.
  • Parallel subagents. ChatGPT Work and Codex "can run subagent workflows by spawning specialized agents in parallel and then collecting their results in one response", which OpenAI calls "particularly helpful for complex tasks that are highly parallel".
  • Finished deliverables. OpenAI describes output such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports and Sites, not only edits to a file you already have.
  • Scheduled work. OpenAI states you can "use scheduled tasks when you want ChatGPT Work to repeat, monitor, or refresh something over time."
  • More surfaces. OpenAI states that Work is on the web and on mobile for eligible paid plans, in addition to the desktop app. xSquads for Work is a desktop app, and it is not a mobile app.

How is xSquads for Work different from the ChatGPT agent?

Both are agentic products that do multi-step work rather than chat. The difference is what the work is aimed at. OpenAI's agent is built around its own virtual computer and a cloud browser; xSquads for Work is built around your own files and folders, where they already sit.

Read across and the shape is simple. OpenAI states that its agent works through its own virtual computer and a cloud browser, while xSquads for Work leaves your files where they are and a squad of bot teammates shares one board. The edit lands on the file itself, next to the file it changed.

Can the ChatGPT agent work on files on my computer?

Yes, in part, and OpenAI documents both halves. On the desktop app, OpenAI states that Work "can also use local files, apps, and the browser when those tools are available", and advises you to "keep the laptop online for steps that need its files or tools". In the cloud, OpenAI states that a container "does not automatically inherit a computer's files, applications, browser sessions, or network access", and that "uploads, project sources, and authorized connected apps remain distinct ways to supply information". OpenAI also states that "a task cannot switch from local execution to the cloud during a turn."

On our side, xSquads for Work works inside the folder you point it at, in place. Every edit lands on the file itself, next to the file it changed, in the folder you already work in. Nothing is uploaded first and no copy has to be synced back.

What if I want to build my own agent on OpenAI's models?

That is a different route, and OpenAI documents it too. The developer path is computer use: "computer use lets a model operate browser and desktop interfaces." OpenAI's docs are clear about who supplies the machine. Under computer use, "you provide the environment and execute the model's requests", and the execution service interface "belongs to your application; it is not an OpenAI-hosted endpoint." So if you are building rather than buying, OpenAI gives you the model and you bring the environment. If what you want is a squad already working on your own files, that is the product side, and it is xSquads for Work.

Which one should you choose?

Two honest decision lines, and the case for OpenAI's agent is real.

  • Choose OpenAI's agent when the work is a finished deliverable, or it happens in websites. If the job is a deck, a spreadsheet, a report or a site, if it needs to sign into sites and click through them, or if you want to schedule it to run and refresh on its own, OpenAI's agent has the stronger tool for it. OpenAI's own documentation describes all of that.
  • Choose xSquads for Work when the work lives in files on your machine. A theme, a repo, a launch folder, a set of documents. The squad works inside it in place and the edit lands on the file itself, next to the file it changed. Nothing is uploaded first and no copy has to be synced back.

The decision usually comes down to one question: is this work on files you would rather keep where they are, or does it just have to get done? Frequently Asked Questions: xSquads for Work and the ChatGPT Agent

Is xSquads for Work a ChatGPT agent alternative?

Yes, for work that lives in files and folders on your machine. Both products do multi-step work rather than chat. OpenAI states that its agent works through its own virtual computer and a cloud browser. xSquads for Work works on the files on your machine, in place, and every edit lands on the file itself.

How is xSquads for Work different from the ChatGPT agent?

The difference is what the work is aimed at and how it is coordinated. OpenAI states that ChatGPT Work is an agent for longer, multi-step work and finished deliverables, and that it can spawn specialized agents in parallel. xSquads for Work edits the files on your machine, in place, and a squad of bot teammates shares one board.

Can the ChatGPT agent work on files on my computer?

Yes, in part. OpenAI states that Work on the desktop app can use local files, apps and the browser when those tools are available, and that a cloud container does not inherit a computer's files, applications, browser sessions or network access. xSquads for Work works inside the folder you point it at, and every edit lands on the file itself.

What does the ChatGPT agent do better than xSquads for Work?

OpenAI's agent works inside websites through its cloud browser, and pairs that with computer use for pages that have no clean API. It adds connectors, parallel subagents, scheduled tasks and finished deliverables such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports and sites. xSquads for Work does none of that. It is a desktop app for work that lives in your own files.

Can I use the ChatGPT agent and xSquads for Work together?

Plenty of teams would, and the two are easy to keep apart. OpenAI's agent is strong for research, for websites, and for deliverables that need to be built from scratch. xSquads for Work is for work that lives in files on your machine, where the change needs to land on the real file. Neither one replaces the other, and neither is a downgrade of the other.

Does OpenAI have an API for building my own agent?

Yes. OpenAI documents computer use, which "lets a model operate browser and desktop interfaces", and the Agents path for building your own. OpenAI states that in that route "you provide the environment and execute the model's requests", and that the execution service interface "is not an OpenAI-hosted endpoint". xSquads for Work is the other choice: a squad already working on your own files, with nothing to build.
