It is a capable product, and it is the closest one to xSquads for Work. Anthropic's product page notes that Cowork is being rolled out under the Claude name. The difference this post turns on is where your files sit when the work happens, not what either product can do.

What does Claude Cowork do well?

A comparison that only flatters us is not worth reading and will not earn a citation. This is what Claude Cowork is genuinely good at, in Anthropic's own words.

• A browser and computer use. Claude in Chrome pairs with Cowork to automate tasks on websites, and computer use covers the work that has no clean API. That is reach a folder-based squad does not have.
• Sub-agent coordination. Complex work is divided into smaller tasks with parallel workstreams, so one Cowork task can cover more ground than a single thread.
• An MCP connector ecosystem. Cowork connects to outside tools and data sources through MCP connectors, with skills for reusable workflows and plugins for bundling both.
• Native Office output. It creates Excel spreadsheets with working formulas, PowerPoint presentations and formatted documents. A squad that works on your files does not replace that.
• More surfaces. Cowork runs on macOS and Windows desktops, on the web, on iOS and Android, and in the Chrome side panel. xSquads for Work is a desktop app.

How is xSquads for Work different from Claude Cowork?

Both are desktop apps that do multi-step work rather than chat, and both can read and write files you have connected. The difference is where your files sit when the work happens, and how the work is coordinated.

Where does Claude Cowork run your work?

This is the part that changes on 6 October 2026, and it is the reason this post is worth reading rather than a general feature roundup. Every sentence below is from Anthropic's own documentation, read on 30 September 2026.

• Cloud sessions run on Anthropic's servers. Anthropic's architecture page states that Claude Cowork sessions run in the cloud by default, with the agent loop and code execution inside an isolated, temporary sandbox on Anthropic-managed infrastructure.
• Local files opened through the desktop app are processed there too. The same page states that the agent's work, including any local files it opens through the desktop app, is processed on Anthropic's servers rather than staying on the device.
• A cloud session cannot reach the device when the app is closed. Anthropic states that if the desktop app is offline, a session in the cloud cannot reach the device. Local file access is limited to folders you have connected, and only while the app is open.
• 6 October 2026: the default moves further to the cloud. Anthropic states that on 6 October 2026 new Claude Cowork tasks on Pro and Max plans run in the cloud, and that the "Only on your computer" option in Settings will be removed. Tasks already started on your computer stay there.
• What does not change. Two things stay where they are. Your folders stay on your computer, and when a task needs a file in the cloud Claude fetches a copy of just that file, which is deleted when the session is deleted. The change is where the work runs, not where your folders live.

Does Claude Cowork work on files on my computer?

Yes. Claude Cowork reads and writes local files in folders you have connected, with no manual uploads or downloads. Anthropic's documentation puts two boundaries on it: file access is limited to the folders you have connected, and in a cloud session it reaches them only while the desktop app is open.

When a task needs a file in the cloud, Claude fetches a copy of just that file, and Anthropic states that those copies are deleted when the session is deleted. It also states that your folders stay on your computer. The change on 6 October is about where the work runs, not about where your folders live.
