# Grok Bot vs Claude Cowork: Two Cloud Agents Compared

Disclosure: xSquads is our own product. This post compares Grok Bot and Claude Cowork, two products we do not own, and every claim about either comes from that vendor's own documentation, cited below.

People compare Grok Bot and Claude Cowork for the same reasons. Both are agentic products that run your work in the cloud, both can keep going without you sitting at the keyboard, and both reach websites as well as files on a paid plan. This post sets out what each vendor says its own product does, keeps the differences that are actually documented, and then explains where a squad that works on your own files fits if neither of these is the shape you want.

## Short answer

xSquads for Work is a desktop app for your files, with a squad of AI bot teammates on one shared board. Grok Bot gives your bots a persistent cloud computer, so the files must be there. Claude Cowork runs its agent loop in a cloud sandbox, and from 6 October 2026 new Pro and Max tasks run there by default.

## What is Grok Bot?

Grok Bot gives each account a persistent cloud computer, with a browser, a filesystem and a terminal, and hands that machine to a set of bots. x.ai's documentation describes the bots working on that computer rather than on yours, which is why the files have to be there before a bot can work on them.

The bots use a browser and computer use for sites that have no clean API, plus connectors and MCP where they exist. All of your bots share the one computer, so files, browser sessions and app logins move between them without being set up again. x.ai states that closing your laptop does not stop a background turn or a routine, and that a task taught once by demonstration is kept as a routine the bot runs again on a schedule or on demand. Grok Bot is available through SuperGrok and Cursor plans, with its own usage allotment, and ships apps for macOS, Windows and Linux, plus iPhone, iPad and Android.

## What is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is an agentic workspace inside the Claude desktop app. Anthropic describes it as [the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code](https://claude.com/docs/cowork/overview), usable without a terminal, aimed at multi-step work rather than code alone.

It [reads and writes local files](https://claude.com/docs/cowork/overview) in folders you have connected, with no manual uploads or downloads. It splits complex work into parallel workstreams with sub-agents, produces deliverables such as Excel files and PowerPoint decks, and connects to outside tools through MCP connectors, skills and plugins. It is [available on paid Claude plans](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/13345190-get-started-with-claude-cowork), and Anthropic states that its sessions run in the cloud by default.

## What do both do well?

A comparison that only flatters one side is not worth reading and will not earn a citation. This is what each product is genuinely good at, in its own vendor's words.

**Grok Bot**

- **A computer that keeps going.** Each account gets a persistent cloud computer, and x.ai states that closing your laptop does not stop a background turn or a routine.
- **It works inside web apps.** Bots use a browser and computer use for sites that have no clean API, plus connectors and MCP where they exist.
- **Routines by demonstration.** Teach a task once and the bot keeps it as a routine it can run again on a schedule or on demand.
- **Shared context.** Every bot uses the same computer, so files, browser sessions and logins carry across a handoff without being set up again.

**Claude Cowork**

- **A browser and computer use.** [Claude in Chrome](https://claude.com/docs/cowork/overview) pairs with Cowork to automate tasks on websites, and computer use covers work that has no clean API.
- **Sub-agent coordination.** Complex work is divided into smaller tasks with parallel workstreams inside a single Cowork task.
- **An MCP connector ecosystem.** Cowork connects to outside tools through [MCP connectors](https://claude.com/docs/cowork/overview), with skills for reusable workflows and plugins for bundling both.
- **Native Office output.** It creates [Excel spreadsheets with working formulas](https://claude.com/docs/cowork/overview), PowerPoint presentations and formatted documents.
- **More surfaces.** Cowork runs on macOS and Windows desktops, on the web, on iOS and Android, and in the Chrome side panel.

## How do Grok Bot and Claude Cowork compare?

Both run your work in the cloud, so the useful differences are narrower than the marketing suggests. They come down to where the files have to be, what happens to a file a task opens, and how the work is coordinated.

| Row | xSquads for Work | Grok Bot | Claude Cowork |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Where your files live | On your machine, on your own files and folders, where they already sit. | On a persistent cloud computer with a browser, a filesystem and a terminal, assigned to your account, so the files have to be there. | In folders you have connected on your computer. Anthropic states that your folders stay on your computer. |
| Getting your work there | No upload step. Point the app at a theme, a repo or a launch folder and the squad works inside it. | The files have to be on that cloud computer before a bot can work on them. | Anthropic states that Claude reads and writes in folders you have connected, with no manual uploads or downloads. |
| What happens to a file a task opens | The squad works inside the folder in place, and every edit lands on the file itself, next to the file it changed. | The changes sit on the cloud computer's filesystem. | Anthropic states that any local files it opens through the desktop app are processed on Anthropic's servers rather than staying on the device. |
| How the work is coordinated | A squad of bot teammates on a shared task board moving from Backlog to To Do to In Progress to Review to Done, with a bot picking up whatever is unassigned. | All of your bots use the same cloud computer, sharing its files, browser sessions and app logins. x.ai's docs say to treat anything placed on it as available to every Bot you run. | Sub-agent coordination divides complex work into smaller tasks with parallel workstreams inside a single Claude Cowork task. |
| Working inside web apps | No. The squad works on files and folders rather than in a browser. | Yes. Bots use a browser and computer use for sites with no clean API, plus connectors and MCP tools. | Yes. Claude in Chrome pairs with Claude Cowork to automate tasks on websites, with computer use for work that has no clean API. |
| Plans and surfaces | A desktop app. xSquads for Work is not a mobile app. | SuperGrok and Cursor plans, with their own usage allotment. Apps for macOS, Windows and Linux, plus iPhone, iPad and Android. | Paid Claude plans. Desktop on macOS and Windows is on all paid plans; web and mobile are Pro, Max and Team, with Enterprise where an admin has enabled it. The Chrome side panel is Max and Team, rolling out to Pro. |

Read across and the shape is simple. Grok Bot hands your bots a computer in the cloud. Claude Cowork runs its agent loop in a cloud sandbox, and from 6 October 2026 it moves further that way on Pro and Max. If your work lives in files on your machine, [xSquads for Work](/xsquad-for-work) leaves those files where they are and sends a squad of bot teammates to them instead.

## Where do Grok Bot and Claude Cowork run your work?

Both products run the task in the cloud rather than on your machine, and that is the biggest thing they share. Each vendor states it in its own documentation, read on the dates in the sources block below.

- **Grok Bot runs on a persistent cloud computer.** x.ai describes a cloud computer with a browser, a filesystem and a terminal, assigned to your account. Closing your laptop does not stop a background turn or a routine.
- **Claude Cowork runs its agent loop on Anthropic's servers.** Anthropic's architecture page states that Claude Cowork sessions run in the cloud by default, with the agent loop and code execution inside an isolated, temporary sandbox on Anthropic-managed infrastructure.
- **A local file a Cowork task opens is processed on those servers.** The same page states that the agent's work, including any local files it opens through the desktop app, is processed on Anthropic's servers rather than staying on the device.
- **6 October 2026 moves the Cowork default further to the cloud.** Anthropic states that on 6 October 2026 new Claude Cowork tasks on Pro and Max plans run in the cloud, and that the "Only on your computer" option in Settings will be removed. Tasks already started on your computer stay there.
- **What still stays on your computer with Cowork.** Anthropic states that your folders stay on your computer, and that when a task needs a file in the cloud Claude fetches a copy of just that file, which is deleted when the session is deleted.

## Which one should you choose?

Three honest decision lines, and both cloud products have a real case.

- **Choose Grok Bot when the work has to keep running with your laptop closed, or it happens in web apps.** A persistent cloud computer means a background turn or a routine carries on after you shut the lid. x.ai's own documentation describes all of that.
- **Choose Claude Cowork when the job reaches across websites and connected tools, or the deliverable is a document.** It works inside websites through Claude in Chrome, connects to outside tools through MCP, and produces Excel files and slide decks. Anthropic's own documentation describes all of that.
- **Choose xSquads for Work when the work lives in files on your machine.** A theme, a repo, a launch folder, a set of documents. The squad works inside it in place and the edit lands on the file itself, next to the file it changed. Nothing is uploaded first and no copy has to be synced back.

None of the three is a downgrade of another. ### Do Grok Bot and Claude Cowork run your work in the cloud?

Yes, both, in each vendor's own words. x.ai describes Grok Bot as a persistent cloud computer assigned to your account. Anthropic states that Claude Cowork sessions run in the cloud by default, with the agent loop and code execution on Anthropic's servers inside an isolated, temporary sandbox.

### Does Grok Bot keep working when my laptop is closed?

Yes. x.ai states that closing your laptop does not stop a background turn or a routine, because the work runs on a cloud computer rather than on your machine. Claude Cowork differs here: Anthropic states that if the desktop app is offline, a cloud session cannot reach the device.

### How is xSquads for Work different from both of them?

xSquads for Work is a desktop app for work that lives in files on your own machine. Grok Bot and Claude Cowork run the task in the cloud. xSquads for Work works inside the folder you point it at, in place, and every edit lands on the file itself, next to the file it changed. A squad of bot teammates shares one task board.

### Can I use xSquads for Work alongside Grok Bot or Claude Cowork?

Plenty of teams would, and the three are easy to keep apart. Grok Bot and Claude Cowork are strong for work that happens in websites and connected tools, and for deliverables built from scratch. xSquads for Work is for work that lives in files on your machine, where the change needs to land on the real file.
