A Meta Muse alternative for work, when the work is files you already keep, is a squad that edits those files and waits for your review. Muse, on Meta's own pages, is a personal AI agent on a secure cloud computer with a browser. xSquads helps knowledge workers become 10x more productive by giving each of them their own squad of specialised agents to delegate to and review.
Short answer
Meta Muse is Meta's personal AI agent. Meta says it chats in the Muse app, on Mac or in WhatsApp, and works on Muse Secure VM, a persistent isolated computer with a browser. xSquads is a desktop squad for your own files, with Review before Done. Mac now, with Windows coming soon.
What is Meta Muse?
Meta's product page calls Muse "AI that gets it done" and describes a personal agent that takes busywork off your plate. You chat with it the way you message a person, in the Muse app on mobile or Mac, or directly in WhatsApp. Meta says Muse Secure VM is a persistent, isolated Linux computer with a full browser, shared by you and the agent, and that you can intervene. Meta says you can connect email, calendar, Instagram and other daily apps, and that if a task needs a tool that does not exist, Muse can build one.
Meta's announcement describes Muse as a personal AI agent that does the work rather than only answering, running on that dedicated virtual machine, and able to keep going after you close the app. Meta says you approve sensitive actions such as sending email or making a purchase, and that Muse can show an audit trail. The product FAQ says Muse can answer questions, complete tasks, browse the web, make purchases, generate images, create documents and connect to apps, and that it keeps working in the background. Meta says Muse is free with a usage limit, and that a paid subscription exists if you want more. This post does not add a price.
Meta also says a Mac download works with your desktop computer's files, apps and browser tabs. That is Meta's claim about the Mac app, and it sits beside the Secure VM, not instead of it. Read Meta's pages for the current boundary between the two. This post will not invent a finer one.
Meta's page includes a section for small business skills and connectors. It also includes creator stories. Those stories are Meta's. This post does not repeat them as reviews, and it does not invent customers of our own.
What does Muse do well?
A comparison that only flatters xSquads will not help you choose.
- A computer and a browser. Meta describes Muse Secure VM as a persistent isolated Linux computer with a full browser, so tasks can happen on the web, not only in a folder.
- Chat where people already are. Meta says you can use the Muse app on mobile or Mac, or WhatsApp.
- It keeps going. Meta's FAQ says Muse continues in the background after you close the app.
- Permissions. Meta says Muse asks before actions such as sending messages, paying, or sharing information with a connected app, and that you can allow once, always allow, or deny.
- Life and work in one agent. Meta's examples run from calendar and shopping to goals and, on the product page, small-business tasks. That breadth is the point of a personal agent.
If that list is the job you have, Muse is a serious product and you should try it from Meta, not from a paraphrase.
How does Muse compare with xSquads?
xSquads is not a personal agent for shopping, bookings and WhatsApp. It is a desktop app for knowledge work. Each person gets a squad of specialised agents. You delegate a mission, point it at your own files and folders, and review the result. The board runs from Backlog to To Do to In Progress to Review to Done.
| Row | xSquads | Meta Muse |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A squad of specialised agents you delegate to and review | Meta's personal AI agent, in Meta's words |
| Where the work runs | On your own files and folders, in the desktop app | Muse Secure VM, a persistent isolated computer with a browser, as Meta describes it |
| How you talk to it | A mission and a shared task board | Chat in the Muse app on mobile or Mac, or in WhatsApp |
| What you review | Cards in Review before they count as done | Meta says you approve sensitive actions and can see an audit trail |
| Web and connected apps | No browser automation of other websites | Meta says Muse can browse, connect apps, and take multi-step actions |
| Devices | Mac now, with Windows coming soon. Not a mobile app | Meta's pages list mobile, Mac, WhatsApp, and a Mac download |
Read across and the choice is the place the work lives. Muse is built as a personal agent with its own computer. xSquads is built as AI teammates on the files you already have. What is a personal AI agent? is the definition both products sit under, without pretending they are the same shape.
A name that sounds similar, OpenMuse, belongs to more than one unrelated project. This post is about Meta Muse only.
Where a squad on your files fits
Choose xSquads when the work is a folder: a launch, a set of notes, a repo, a pile of documents that must stay where they are. The squad drafts, researches and tidies. You read the change. You do not upload the folder onto someone else's computer as the first step, and you do not keep a second copy in sync by hand.
Choose Muse when you want one personal agent that can use a browser and the apps Meta lets you connect, including the life-admin tasks Meta describes, and you are comfortable with Meta's VM and Meta's permission model. Those are different requirements, and both can be true for the same person on different days.
xSquads does not generate a checkout, book a restaurant, or sit in WhatsApp. Muse, as Meta describes it, is aimed at that kind of action. xSquads does not claim those jobs. The job it does claim is knowledge work: each person 10x more productive because they can delegate to specialised agents and review the output.

Which one should you use for work?
Use Muse for the personal agent Meta is shipping: chat, a secure VM, a browser, connected apps, and approval on sensitive actions. Use xSquads for a squad on the files of your actual job, with a board and a Review step you control. Use both if you want an agent in WhatsApp and a squad in the folder. Neither choice requires you to bad-mouth the other.
