ChatGPT Business vs Plus

ChatGPT Business vs Plus:
one seat or a shared workspace.

ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Business are OpenAI's two paid plans for work, and the choice turns on how many people need a seat. Plus is one person's plan, billed monthly. Business is a shared workspace that starts at two seats, adds an admin console, and costs the same per seat as Plus once a team is on annual billing. This guide compares the two on price, seat minimums and controls, with every figure taken from OpenAI's own pages.

In short

ChatGPT Plus is a single-user plan at $20 a month. ChatGPT Business is a shared workspace that starts at two seats and is $25 per user a month billed monthly, or $20 per user a month billed annually. Business adds an admin console, SSO, roles and spend controls, and it does not train on your chats by default. From two people on annual billing, a Business seat costs the same as Plus.

What ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Business Are

ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Business are two different shapes of the same product. OpenAI sells Plus to an individual: one login, one person's chats, billed month to month with no minimum. OpenAI sells Business to a company: a single workspace that holds a seat per person, starting at two seats, billed monthly or annually, with an admin console on top.

The two plans read as the same model and answer the same questions. What separates them is ownership and administration. Plus is yours alone and you manage it. Business is a workspace someone administers, and that is the reason a company buys it even when the per-seat price is identical.

xSquads is not one of these plans. It is a desktop app where a team runs a squad of AI bot teammates on a shared task board over its own files, and it sits beside whichever ChatGPT plan a person already pays for.

ChatGPT Business vs Plus at a Glance

Both plans are billed per user per month, and OpenAI publishes the same headline features across them. The differences are the seat minimum, the billing options and the administration a company gets.

Read across and the pattern is simple. For one person, Plus is the cheaper plan because it has no minimum. For a team of two or more on annual billing, a Business seat costs the same per person as Plus and adds the admin console, SSO and the training default. This page lists US prices; OpenAI states that prices vary by country and currency.

What Each Plan Costs

OpenAI prices both plans per user per month, and the arithmetic is the whole decision. These are OpenAI's US list prices, checked on the date shown at the bottom of this page.

Standard seat

The everyday Business seat. OpenAI lists it at $25 per user a month billed monthly, or $20 per user a month billed annually, with access to ChatGPT and its work and coding surfaces.

Premium seat

A higher-usage seat for the person who empties the limits first. OpenAI lists it at $125 per user a month billed monthly, or $100 per user a month billed annually.

A two-seat floor

A Business workspace starts at two seats, Standard or Premium in any mix. That floor is why a solo buyer pays for a seat they may not fill, and why the plan starts to make sense at two people.

Monthly or annual billing

Plus is monthly only. Business is sold monthly or annually, and the annual price is the lower per-seat figure because it is a commitment for the term.

The per-seat price is the easy part. The commitment is the part to read twice: the Business annual plan is a commitment for the term, while a Plus subscription can be cancelled from the next month. For a company that will still exist in a year, that is a fair trade for the admin controls. For a pilot that might not, the monthly Business plan costs more per seat but keeps the exit open.

Who Each Plan Is For

OpenAI draws the line itself: Plus is designed to be used by an individual, and Business is for a business. Here is what that means in practice, in both directions.

An admin console

A Business workspace has an admin console where seats are bought, assigned and reassigned, so joining and leaving is an admin action rather than a personal one.

SSO and roles

Business adds single sign-on and roles, which is what a company needs to put a tool under its own identity and access rules.

Spend controls

Business adds spend controls and the option to buy additional usage as workspace credits, so the bill is governed at the workspace rather than by each person's card.

Training off by default

OpenAI states that Business content is not used to train its models by default. On the individual plans, training is on until the person turns the setting off.

How to Decide

Four questions settle almost every ChatGPT Business vs Plus choice. Answer them in order and the plan picks itself.

  1. 1

How many people need a seat?

One person points at Plus, because Business has a two-seat minimum and would bill for a seat nobody uses. Two or more points at Business.

  2. 2

Can the team commit for a year?

If yes, annual Business is the cheapest per-seat figure and matches Plus on price. If the team might not last the term, weigh the monthly Business price against the commitment.

  3. 3

    Does the company need administration?

If a client, a security review or an IT team needs SSO, roles and spend controls, those live on Business and not on Plus, and they are often the real reason to move.

  4. 4

Is the requirement about data or about work?

If the requirement is that chats are not used for training by default, Business answers it. If the requirement is to finish a team's files and reports, that is a different layer, and a plan alone does not cover it.

When a ChatGPT Seat Is Not the Whole Job

A ChatGPT plan gives each person a strong assistant. It does not, on its own, run the work that lands in a shared queue. That is a separate layer, and it is where the choice stops being about Plus against Business.

Every person gets an assistant, not a queue

A plan gives each seat its own assistant with its own chats. It does not give the team one place where a pile of work is assigned, tracked and reviewed.

The work lives outside the chat

When the job is a set of files, a folder or a repo, the assistant and the work can be in two different places. A squad on your own files keeps them in one.

A person still signs off

A board with a Review step means the work arrives as a proposal a person approves, which is what makes it safe to hand a queue to bots.

One view, not many threads

A shared task board shows what is in progress and what is waiting for review in one place, instead of scattering the status across as many chats as there are seats.

Frequently Asked Questions: ChatGPT Business vs Plus

What is the difference between ChatGPT Business and Plus?

ChatGPT Plus is a single-user plan and ChatGPT Business is a shared workspace that starts at two seats. Plus is billed monthly at $20 a month with no minimum. Business is billed per user per month at $25 monthly or $20 annually, and it adds an admin console, SSO, roles, spend controls and training off by default. Both plans are sold by OpenAI.

How much more does ChatGPT Business cost than Plus?

It depends on the billing and the headcount. A Business Standard seat is $25 per user a month billed monthly or $20 per user a month billed annually, against $20 a month for Plus. For two or more people on annual billing, a Business seat costs the same per person as Plus. A solo buyer pays more, because the workspace has a two-seat minimum.

Is ChatGPT Business worth it for one person?

Usually not on price alone. A Business workspace starts at two seats, so one person pays for at least two, and the per-seat figure only reaches the same $20 as Plus on annual billing. A solo user should choose Business only when a client contract or a security requirement needs the workspace default rather than a setting they control themselves.

Can I use ChatGPT Plus for my team instead of Business?

You can, and some small teams do, by giving each person a Plus account. What you lose is the layer that makes it a team tool: the admin console, SSO, roles and spend controls, and a workspace that owns the seats. Business also turns model training off by default, which Plus leaves on until each person changes the setting.

Does ChatGPT Business train on my data?

OpenAI states that Business content is not used to train its models by default. On the individual plans, training is on until the person turns off the model-improvement setting. That default is one of the practical reasons a company picks Business over a stack of personal Plus accounts.

Do I need ChatGPT Business or Enterprise?

Business is the plan for a team that wants a shared workspace with administration. Enterprise is OpenAI's plan above it, sold through sales, for larger organisations with procurement and security requirements. Start with Business when the question is seats and controls, and involve sales when the question is a company-wide contract.
