OpenAI Dots Alternative: AI Teammates on Your Own Files

An OpenAI Dots alternative is another way to give a knowledge worker AI teammates, when the work should stay on files you already have rather than on a cloud computer. OpenAI Dots are always-on agents. xSquads for Work is a desktop squad on your own files and folders, with review before a card is done.

xSquads is our product. Claims about Dots below come from OpenAI's announcement and the public posts linked in the sources.

Short answer

Choose Dots when you want OpenAI's always-on agent, its cloud computer, and apps you already use. Choose xSquads for Work when the work is a folder on your machine and you want a squad you can review. Choose a code factory when the outcome is software that has to ship as a pull request. Dots are not the ChatGPT agent. They are a newer always-on layer. The earlier agent comparison is ChatGPT agent alternative.

What OpenAI says Dots are

On 29 September 2026 OpenAI introduced Dots as always-on agents. OpenAI says they are powered by GPT-6 Astra, that each one has its own cloud computer and browser, and that plugins connect them to over 4,000 apps. You can reach a Dot in ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams. Introducing dots.

OpenAI says you start with a primary Dot. Over time, it envisions teams of dots working together on your behalf. The first Dot is included in Pro and Business Premium at no extra cost, in eligible markets. Enterprise users, including Edu and Healthcare, can try a beta when a workspace admin enables it. OpenAI also shared a preview of specialist dots for organizations: their own identity, for access management, IT-provisioned hardware, and deep integrations with a company's systems of record. OpenAI says it is starting with focused enterprise pilots, and that it is working with Microsoft so specialist dots can sit under Agent 365 controls.

Conversations with a Dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits. When a Dot starts or manages tasks in Codex or ChatGPT Work, those tasks still count as usual.

OpenAI announced the launch on X. OpenAI on X. The same announcement is the Hacker News thread "Dots: Always-on agents", which linked the OpenAI post. When this page was read on 13 October 2026 that thread showed 770 points and 647 comments. Hacker News.

What Dots do well

These are strengths OpenAI states on the announcement.

  • A computer that keeps working. Each Dot has its own cloud computer and browser. You can open that computer and inspect the work. OpenAI says a Dot can run several projects without a separate thread for each one. You can also give it permission to connect to your laptop. Your computer stays separate unless you connect it.
  • Apps you already use. Plugins connect a Dot to over 4,000 apps. ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams are where OpenAI says you can message it, with texting described as coming soon. OpenAI says a Dot carries context across those channels.
  • Background help with a limit. When you are not actively working with it, OpenAI says a Dot looks for ways to help. It calls this proactive research. That research uses connected apps with tools restricted to read-only. OpenAI says those tools cannot send messages, change app content, or control your browser or computer.
  • Rules and review. Custom Rules let you allow an action, require approval, or block it. Auto-review checks actions that could affect accounts or share information. Some tasks, such as changing a password, stay with you. OpenAI also says Dots can still make mistakes, so consequential work should be reviewed.
  • A first Dot on paid plans. The first Dot is included for Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets. OpenAI describes an early tester whose Dot noticed a forgotten invoice to a publication, prepared the invoice, and sent it after his approval. That is OpenAI's account of the test.

A cloud computer, a browser, and app connections are the reasons to pick Dots. A folder-based squad does not do that job.

How xSquads for Work compares

xSquads for Work gives each knowledge worker their own squad of specialised agents to delegate to and review, so they become 10x more productive. The squad works on your own files and folders, local-first. Cards sit on a shared task board that runs from Backlog to Review to Done. The app is on Mac now, with Windows coming soon. It is free via the waitlist.

Dots and xSquads both sit next to the idea OpenAI names when it talks about teams of dots: AI teammates, more than one agent, with a person still on the decisions. An AI coworker, in this comparison, is that role for one task. The split is where the files live.

Where a software factory fits

Dots are a conversation plus a cloud computer. Shipping software is a production line.

A code factory, or software factory, is an organized production system for shipping software: repeatable steps, shared tools, and a definition of done. What is a software factory.

xSquad operates as a code factory. AI agents open pull requests and do the production steps. A human reviews before merge. Capacity scales by adding or removing agents. Quality gates are tests, review, and human approval. That is the line on code factory and on agent swarms.

Use Dots when OpenAI's computer and app connections are the tool for the task. Use the factory when the outcome is a pull request, with a person merging it. Use cases shows missions a squad can take on files. The factory is the path when those missions are code that has to ship.

Which one should you choose?
