Proactive AI Assistant: What Claude Duet Shows About Agents That Come to You

A proactive AI assistant is an assistant that comes to you. It watches the apps you connect, sends a brief, does work in the background, and asks before it acts on your behalf. On 21 October 2026 Anthropic opened a waitlisted research preview of Claude Duet, a proactive agent for professionals and small business owners. CNBC and The Verge both frame it as Anthropic's answer to Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots.
xSquads is our product. Claims about Claude Duet, Dots, and Muse come from the pages linked in each section.
Short answer
Choose Duet for Anthropic's app, OpenAI Dots for OpenAI's always-on agent, or Meta Muse for Meta's personal agent and its browser. Choose xSquads for Work when the work is a folder and you want a squad you can review. What a personal AI agent is is the definition under all four.
What Claude Duet actually does
Anthropic's announcement says the preview is a waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers, as an app on iOS and Android and on claude.ai. "It comes to you with what needs your attention, completes tasks you ask of it, keeps working even when you step away, and checks with you before it acts on your behalf."
Each morning it sends a short brief across connected apps, then messages you only when something needs attention. You can hand it a meeting, a dashboard, a forecast, a prototype, or a web app. It runs on a virtual machine with its own browser, so your laptop can be off, and it carries over memory, skills, and connectors from your Claude account. The product page says it is powered by Opus 5.5. You cannot pick another model.
Connectors named on that page include Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, LinkedIn, Docusign, HubSpot, Canva, and Shopify. Purchases go through Link or Shop Pay after you approve them, on a virtual card. 1Password sign-in is described as coming soon. @testingcatalog flagged the shopping and login lines the same day. @claudeai posted: "It never directly sees your passwords, a new classifier guards against sharing sensitive information, and the important decisions stay with you." That post had 2,156 likes on 22 October 2026.
The limits that matter today
The help centre says you need Pro or Max, a US Claude account, and an invitation. Team and Enterprise are not included yet. The waitlist does not promise a date. During the preview, Duet is included on Pro and Max at no extra cost.
It uses your plan's limits, including the five-hour session and the weekly limit, at the same rate as Claude chat. The morning brief and check-ins count, so you can hit the limit sooner than with chat alone. Checks run at set intervals. The announcement says every few hours, because checking nonstop would burn the plan faster. Something urgent can arrive between checks. Admission includes one full limit reset, of both windows, available until 30 November 2026.
You cannot watch its browser or take it over, and it cannot see the files on your computer. It does not call or text other people. Email still needs your approval. Trading securities, moving money between accounts, and opening someone else's account stay off-limits even if you approve. Microsoft 365 is not available yet. Slack works with limits.
Anthropic calls this an early version that "still might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent." Personal errands, such as booking tickets, are "not quite as strong." Review the draft before you confirm it. On Hacker News the thread showed 349 points and 318 comments on 22 October 2026. Computer0 wrote: "I really have no interest in this if it's going to use my plan's regular limits."
What proactive should mean at work
@Insha__33 asked what makes a personal agent different from tools people already use, "like lets say cc or codex or chatgpt". Claude Code, Codex, and a ChatGPT thread wait until you open them. A proactive agent messages you first. AI agent vs chatbot is that split without the brief.Jacob Andreou, Microsoft's Copilot lead, split the same choice into three tabs in an interview with Practicaly: Chat for a quick answer, Cowork when he already knows the steps, Autopilot when something needs watching or the goal has no plan yet. Copilot Autopilot is that third tab. Claude Cowork is Anthropic's delegated-task product, and it is not Duet. A question you can check in one read stays a chat. A job with named steps is a delegation you still read. A goal with no steps is the proactive case, and it has to stop before a send, a payment, a signature, or a delete.
The meter is part of the decision. Duet's checks draw on the same Claude limits as chat. OpenAI says Dot conversations do not count toward ChatGPT limits, while Codex and ChatGPT Work tasks the Dot starts still do. Introducing dots.
A squad splits what one generalist would pile into a single thread. The Chief of Staff Squad is three agents: Aide keeps priorities, Digest sorts mail and drafts replies, and Prep writes the brief. Nothing is sent without your approval.
How xSquads for Work fits
xSquads for Work gives each knowledge worker their own squad of specialised agents to delegate to and review, so they become 10x more productive. The squad works on your own files and folders, on your computer. Cards move from Backlog to To Do to In Progress to Review to Done. Bots propose, you approve. Anything irreversible is escalated to you instead of executed. Mac now, Windows coming soon. Free via the waitlist. It does not drive a browser through other companies' sites, and it does not send a morning brief from your inbox.
When the proactive work is software
Alex Lavaee wrote on 21 October: "Agents write more code than any of us can review. We often end up skimming the PR/diff and pushing."A managed software factory is that line run for you, instead of a toolkit you staff yourself. On this site, xSquad operates as your code factory. What a managed AI software factory does.
On the code factory page, agents open pull requests you can read. Nothing merges without your approval. A person reviews before code is merged. You add or remove agents as the workload changes. Quality gates are automated tests, code reviews, QA validation, and human approval. The page does not publish a price. Current plans go through the contact form.
Use the factory when the outcome is software that has to merge. Use a personal agent when the outcome is a brief or a draft.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a proactive AI assistant?
A proactive AI assistant comes to you. It watches the apps you connect, sends a brief, does work in the background, and asks before it acts on your behalf. Claude Duet, OpenAI Dots, and Meta Muse are the public examples shipping this month. A chatbot waits for the next message.
What is a proactive AI agent vs a chatbot?
A chatbot answers the question you just asked. A proactive AI agent keeps a goal, uses tools, and reaches out when something needs you, including when you did not open the chat. The proactive part is that reach-out, not a longer reply. You still need a way to stop a send, a payment, or a delete.
Is Claude Duet available yet?
Not as a general release. Anthropic opened a research preview on 21 October 2026, behind a waitlist, for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US. Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet. Joining the waitlist does not guarantee a date.
Does Claude Duet use my Claude usage limits?
Yes. It shares your plan's usage limits, including the five-hour session and the weekly limit, at the same rate as chat. Background work counts, including the morning brief and check-ins, so you can hit the limit sooner than with chat alone. It is included on Pro and Max at no extra cost, with one full limit reset when you are admitted, available until 30 November 2026.
What's a good Claude Duet alternative for work?
If the work is files on your computer, xSquads for Work is a squad of specialised agents you delegate to and review. Cards wait in Review, and nothing is sent until you approve it. The app is on Mac now, with Windows coming soon, and it is free via the waitlist. Duet fits when you want Anthropic's phone app, its cloud computer, and connectors such as Gmail and Slack.
Is a proactive AI assistant safe to give access to email?
Only if you can see the draft and stop the send. Claude Duet asks before it sends, pays, signs, or deletes, and Anthropic says it can still misread a thread. On xSquads, finished work waits in Review, and anything irreversible is escalated instead of executed. A connected inbox is not permission to send.
