Claude Duet Alternative: One Agent or a Squad

Claude Duet is Anthropic's proactive agent: a research preview in its own app on iOS, Android, and claude.ai, for professionals and small business owners, waitlisted to US Pro and Max subscribers. The Claude Duet alternative for knowledge work is xSquads for Work, because each person gets a squad of specialised agents to delegate to and review, instead of one generalist tied to a Claude plan. It is on Mac now, with Windows coming soon, and it is free via the waitlist.
xSquads is our product. Claims about Claude Duet below come from Anthropic, the coverage, and the posts linked in the sources.
Short answer
Choose Claude Duet when you want Anthropic's proactive agent, its cloud computer, and the connectors on a Claude Pro or Max plan, and you can join the US waitlist. Choose xSquads for Work when you want a squad of specialists on the work you already have, with a review before anything counts as done. OpenAI Dots and Meta Muse are the other two agents this launch is being set beside. What "proactive" means across the three is proactive AI assistant. Claude Cowork is a different Anthropic product: Claude Cowork alternative.
What is Claude Duet?
On 21 October 2026 Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet. CNBC and The Verge both date the announcement to that day. Anthropic's announcement calls it a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent: it comes to you with what needs your attention, completes tasks you ask of it, keeps working when you step away, and checks with you before it acts on your behalf. Anthropic says it built Duet for professionals and small business owners.
The preview is a standalone app on iOS and Android, and on claude.ai. It is included in Pro and Max and uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. Access is a waitlist. Anthropic's help centre says you need a Pro or Max plan, a Claude account in the US, and an invitation. It is not on Team or Enterprise yet. Anthropic says it plans to bring Duet to those plans later. Invitations go out in waves, so the waitlist does not promise a date.
Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5. The help centre says you cannot choose a model. It has its own computer in the cloud and its own browser, so it can keep working after you close the app. The same article says each morning it looks across email and calendar, picks what most needs attention, and can start drafts for you to review. Through the day it messages you when something needs you. Anthropic's announcement says it checks connected accounts every few hours, because checking nonstop would use the plan's limits much faster.
Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything, it shows you what it is about to do and waits. A few actions stay off-limits even if you approve them. The help centre names trading securities, moving money between accounts, and accessing someone else's account.
Anthropic says Duet can use the over 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. TechRepublic reports the same connector count, and names tools such as Slack, Gmail, HubSpot, and QuickBooks. The announcement also names Stripe, Gusto, LinkedIn, Docusign, Canva, and Shopify among the jobs those connectors can take.
What Claude Duet does well
These are strengths Anthropic states, and they are real reasons to use Duet if you can get in.
- It comes to you. A morning brief from email and calendar, then a message when something needs attention, instead of a chat that waits for the next prompt. Anthropic.
- A computer that keeps going. Its own cloud computer and browser, so the laptop can be off. Anthropic.
- A large connector list. Over 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. Anthropic, also reported by TechRepublic.
- A stop before the irreversible step. It asks before sending, paying, signing, or deleting. Help centre.
- One thread for work. Anthropic built the preview around workplace tasks. It says personal errands, such as booking tickets, are not quite as strong. Anthropic.
A phone app, a cloud browser, and that connector list are the job Duet is for. A squad on your own files does not do that job.
The limits that matter today
The help centre is the list to read before you join the waitlist.
- US Pro and Max only. A Claude account in the US, a Pro or Max plan, and a waitlist invitation. Not available outside the US during the preview. Not on Team or Enterprise yet.
- The plan's limits. Duet shares your plan's usage limits, including the five-hour session and the weekly limit, at the same rate as chat. Background work counts, including the morning brief and check-ins, so you can hit the limit sooner than with chat alone. During the preview it is included on Pro and Max at no extra cost. Admission includes one full limit reset, of both windows, available until 30 November 2026.
- Checks are not continuous. It checks accounts at set intervals. Something urgent can arrive between checks. The announcement's reason for the gap is the same limit: checking nonstop would burn the plan faster.
- You cannot watch the browser. You cannot watch Duet work in its browser or take the browser over. It also cannot see the files on your computer.
- Microsoft 365 is not available yet. Some connectors, such as Slack, work with limits.
- Some actions stay blocked. Trading securities, moving money between accounts, and accessing someone else's account stay off-limits even with approval. It does not make phone calls or send text messages to other people. Email still needs your approval.
- It can still be wrong. Anthropic calls this an early version that might misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent. Review the draft before you confirm it.
How Dots, Muse, and X framed the launch
CNBC and The Verge frame Claude Duet as Anthropic's agent against OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse. CNBC describes Duet as built for small businesses and professionals, able to send a daily brief, keep tabs on connected apps, and take on tasks such as dashboards, scheduling, and forecasts. The sourced comparisons of those two products are OpenAI Dots alternative and Meta Muse alternative. This page does not re-argue them.Three posts on X show how people took the launch.
- Kensei shared a setup guide, "Claude Duet in 10 Steps: Set Up Your First Proactive Agent."
- AJawhar wrote that Claude Duet did the core feature of an app he built so any agent could ping a phone, and that Duet does it only if the agent is Claude.
- This post sets Claude Duet next to Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots and treats the three as the same pitch: an agent that proactively does the work.
That pitch is one generalist per person. The split on this page is what you delegate to.
How xSquads for Work compares
xSquads for Work gives each knowledge worker their own squad of specialised agents to delegate to and review, so they become 10x more productive. The squad works on your own files and folders. Cards sit on a shared task board from Backlog to Review to Done. You review before a card is done. The app is on Mac now, with Windows coming soon. It is free via the waitlist.Duet is one agent, on Anthropic's computer, inside a Claude plan. xSquads is a squad you assign and then read. Neither one is a downgrade of the other. They are different shapes.
| Claude Duet | xSquads for Work | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | One proactive agent per person (Anthropic) | A squad of specialised agents for each knowledge worker (xSquads for Work) |
| Where the work runs | Its own cloud computer and browser. You cannot watch or take over the browser (help centre) | Your own files and folders |
| Where you reach it | iOS, Android, and claude.ai (Anthropic) | Desktop app. Mac now, Windows coming soon |
| Before a send or a payment | Asks before sending, paying, signing, or deleting (help centre) | You review before a card is done |
| Who can use it | US Pro and Max, waitlist. Not Team or Enterprise yet (help centre) | Free via the waitlist |
| Model and limits | Claude Opus 5.5. You cannot choose a model. Shares the plan's limits, and background checks count (help centre) | A squad on your own files, free via the waitlist |
xSquads does not send a morning brief from your inbox, and it does not drive a browser through other companies' sites. If that is the requirement, Duet is the product Anthropic is previewing, and the proactive AI assistant page is the longer account of that category.
When the backlog is software
Anthropic says you can hand Duet a prototype or a web app, on its cloud computer. A team's backlog of software that has to ship is a different line.
An AI software factory is a production line for code: a request comes in, agents do a bounded step, checks run, and a person decides what merges. A managed software factory is that line run for you, instead of a toolkit you assemble and staff yourself. On this site, that offer is xSquad operating as your code factory. What a managed AI software factory does.
The code factory page describes the operating shape. Agents open pull requests you can read. A person reviews before code is merged. Nothing merges without your approval. You add or remove agents as the workload changes. The page does not publish a price. Current plans go through the contact form.
Use Duet when the outcome is a brief or a draft on Anthropic's agent. Use the factory when the outcome is software that has to merge.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Claude Duet when you want Anthropic's proactive agent: a morning brief, a cloud computer and browser, connectors from the Claude Marketplace, and an ask before a send, a payment, a signature, or a delete. You need Pro or Max, a US account, and a waitlist invitation. It shares that plan's limits. Read Anthropic's pages for the current boundary.
- Choose xSquads for Work when you want each knowledge worker to delegate to a squad of specialised agents and review the result. Mac now, Windows coming soon. Free via the waitlist.
- Choose the managed software factory when the backlog is software: agents open pull requests, and a person reviews before anything merges.
xSquads for Work is free. Join the waitlist and we'll send the download link.
